Antopia

An interactive immersive experience created in collaboration with Museums Victoria.

Role: Art Director

In the initial stage of creating an immersive experience I’ve found that exploring how a project might feel is usually the first step and happens before creative direction is locked.

One of the first and most difficult design challenges of this project was defining how ants see their world through pheromones. Initially we wanted to take a more graphic approach, using light and displacement to highlight the path ants took through the nest. Due to the scale of what needed to be communicated we needed to take a different direction...

Characters

Ants look quite terrifying up close - One of our first design challenges was ensuring our characters felt inviting to the audience whilst preserving scientific accuracy. In this room the queen uses pheromones to direct the colony as a whole. The creative direction was aimed at making her feel like a cosmic goddess.

it was equally important to maintain a level of accuracy in the worker ant while keeping its overall look cute and approachable.

Antopia - Threshold

Materiality

I wanted to capture a somewhat whimsical feeling for the way pheromones might be translated into a visual space, ideally i wanted it to feel mysterious and earthy rather than alien.
